ISO 50001 is the energy management standard for organisations where energy is a material cost. We build the system around your real energy use, set a baseline and indicators that show improvement, take it through internal audit and management review, and prepare you for an accredited certification body.
ISO 50001 certification in the UAE and Dubai with ESGweise: gap analysis, energy review, significant energy uses, energy baseline and EnPIs, energy management system design and implementation, internal audit, management review and Stage 1 and Stage 2 audit support. The certifiable edition is ISO 50001:2018 with Amendment 1:2024. ESGweise is not a certification body; certificates are issued by an accredited certification body of your choosing.
What is ISO 50001 certification?
ISO 50001 certification is independent confirmation, by an accredited certification body, that your energy management system meets ISO 50001:2018.
ISO 50001:2018 sets the requirements for a system that manages energy use and improves energy performance year on year. It does more than ask for a policy and procedures: the standard requires you to demonstrate continual improvement in energy performance, measured against a baseline, while leaving the size of that improvement to you. It shares its clause structure with ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and ISO 9001, so it can run inside an integrated system.
Who needs ISO 50001 in the UAE and GCC?
Organisations where energy is a material cost or a reporting obligation: the certificate is voluntary, and a group policy, client or contract can make it a requirement.
- Manufacturers and industrial sites with compressed air, motors, process heat and cooling loads.
- Building owners and operators: hotels, malls, hospitals, schools and office portfolios, where cooling is usually the largest load.
- Data centres, district cooling and utilities, where energy is the product or the main operating cost.
- Subsidiaries of multinational groups whose group policy sets ISO 50001 for every large site.
- Organisations with decarbonisation targets, which need Scope 1 and 2 data and the savings that cut them.
Which edition of ISO 50001 applies?
ISO 50001:2018 with Amendment 1:2024: ISO reviewed and confirmed the 2018 edition in 2024, and no revision is listed.
- ISO 50001:2018: the second edition, published in August 2018, replacing ISO 50001:2011. It introduced normalisation of EnPIs and baselines for the variables that drive energy use, gave top management a stronger role, and expanded the energy data collection plan.
- ISO 50001:2018/Amd 1:2024: published in February 2024, it adds climate change to the issues the organisation considers in its context, and climate-related requirements to those of interested parties. Certification bodies audit it now.
How do you get ISO 50001 certified?
In five steps over six to twelve months: a gap analysis, designing the system, running it long enough to build records, an internal audit and management review, then the certification audit.
Gap analysis
Where you stand against every requirement, what metering and data you already hold, and a fixed quote for the rest including expected certification body fees.
Design the system around your energy use
Energy review, significant energy uses, baseline, EnPIs, objectives and action plans, operational controls and an energy data collection plan.
Run it and build the records
Training for the people who operate significant energy uses, monitoring against EnPIs, and energy considerations built into purchasing and design.
Internal audit and management review
An impartial internal audit of the whole system and a management review of energy performance on real data, both required before Stage 2.
Certification audit
Help choosing an accredited certification body, then support through Stage 1 and Stage 2 and the closure of any findings.
How much does ISO 50001 certification cost in the UAE?
Certification body fees typically run from AED 10,000 to AED 20,000 for initial certification and AED 7,000 to AED 15,000 for recertification; our own work is quoted as a fixed scope after a short call.
- Certification body, initial certification: typically AED 10,000 to AED 20,000
- Surveillance audits: smaller annual audits in years two and three
- Recertification: typically AED 7,000 to AED 15,000 in the third year
- ESGweise: quoted as a fixed scope after a short call. Contact us for a quote.
Headcount, number of sites, total energy consumption and the number of significant energy uses decide where you sit in each range.
How long does ISO 50001 certification take?
Six to twelve months, because the certification body needs a baseline and evidence that energy performance is being managed against it.
The baseline needs a representative period of data and the EnPIs need months of tracking to show a trend. The data sets the timeline, not the documents, and a timeline quoted in weeks ends in a deferred Stage 2.
What are the energy review, baseline and EnPIs?
They are the technical core of ISO 50001: the energy review finds where energy goes, the baseline fixes the starting point, and the EnPIs show whether performance improves.
- Energy review: analyses energy use and consumption from measured data, identifies the significant energy uses, the variables that drive them and the people who affect them, and ranks the opportunities to improve.
- Energy baseline (EnB): the reference period against which improvement is measured, normalised for relevant variables such as cooling degree days, occupancy or production.
- Energy performance indicators (EnPIs): the measures that show performance, such as kWh per tonne produced or per square metre cooled, chosen so a change in weather or output does not hide a real result.
An energy audit gives the energy review its data and its list of measures. In UAE buildings, cooling is usually the largest significant energy use, and a chiller plant audit sets the cooling EnPIs on measured plant efficiency. Does ESGweise issue the ISO 50001 certificate?
No: ESGweise prepares you, and an accredited certification body audits the system and issues the certificate.
ISO/IEC 17021-1 keeps consultancy and certification apart, and that separation is what gives the certificate its value. ISO implementation builds the system, ISO internal audit supplies the impartial audit the standard requires, and once you are certified, ISO certification maintenance keeps every site ready between audits. ISO 50001 Certification: questions we hear most
How much does ISO 50001 certification cost in the UAE?
There are two parts. The certification body's audit fees typically run from AED 10,000 to AED 20,000 for initial certification, with smaller surveillance audits in years two and three and recertification at AED 7,000 to AED 15,000 in the third year. Headcount, number of sites, energy use and the number of significant energy uses decide where you sit. The second part is building the energy management system. ESGweise quotes that as a fixed scope after a short call. Contact us for a quote.
Is ISO 50001 mandatory in the UAE?
No law makes ISO 50001 certification a general requirement in the UAE. Organisations certify because a group policy, a government client or a large customer asks for it, or because energy is a cost worth managing systematically. Regulators do ask for energy data: in Abu Dhabi, permitted facilities report energy and water consumption in the annual environmental data report. An ISO 50001 system produces that data under control.
What is the difference between ISO 50001 implementation and certification?
Implementation is building and running the energy management system: the energy review, significant energy uses, baseline, EnPIs, objectives, operational controls, internal audit and management review. Your organisation does it, often with a consultant. Certification is the independent two-stage audit by an accredited certification body, ending in a certificate valid for three years and kept through annual surveillance audits. ISO/IEC 17021-1 keeps the two apart: a certification body cannot certify a system it helped build.
Is ISO 50001:2018 still the current edition?
Yes. ISO 50001:2018, the second edition, was published in August 2018, and ISO reviewed and confirmed it in 2024. It carries Amendment 1:2024, published in February 2024, which adds the climate change consideration to the organisation's context and interested parties. No revision is listed on ISO's catalogue as at October 2026, so a system built now is built to the edition you will be certified against.
What is the difference between an energy audit and ISO 50001?
An energy audit is a diagnostic: it measures where energy goes at a point in time and identifies savings opportunities, under the ISO 50002 series. ISO 50001 is the management system that keeps those savings and finds the next ones, through a baseline, indicators, responsibilities and review. An audit on its own decays as operations change. An energy audit is often the right first step, because its findings feed straight into the ISO 50001 energy review.
Are you an ISO 50001 certification body?
No. ESGweise is a consultancy and prepares organisations for certification. An accredited certification body audits the system and issues the certificate. In the UAE the national accreditation body is EIAC, and certification bodies accredited elsewhere under the international recognition arrangements are also accepted. Check that the body you choose is accredited for ISO 50001 and for your scope. We have no commercial tie to any certification body, so we can help you compare them.
