Each test cites the requirement or disclosure and the evidence to examine. The Excel version adds a rating drop-down, the same tests by department, a findings log and a review plan.
Disclosure tests by section
This is a generalised checklist. It does not set out your organisation's specific requirements. It is a sound starting point, and we recommend tailoring it to your organisation's context, processes, risks and legal obligations. For support on your GRI reporting, contact us at [email protected] or [email protected].
Written against the GRI Universal Standards 2021 (GRI 1, GRI 2 and GRI 3), required for all reporting published on or after 1 January 2023, with the applicable GRI Sector and Topic Standards. Material topics not yet determined? Our double materiality methodology sets out the impact assessment on which GRI 3 relies.
Section 1 GRI 1: Foundation 2021, requirements and reporting principles
- 1.0 Claim of use and applicable edition
Has the organization determined whether the reported information is prepared in accordance with the GRI Standards or with reference to the GRI Standards, and is it prepared using the Universal Standards 2021, which are required for all reporting published on or after 1 January 2023?
Evidence: Documented decision on the claim, approved before drafting; register of each GRI Standard applied with its issue year; no reliance on the superseded 2016 Universal Standards or the discontinued Core and Comprehensive options
- 1.0 Reporting with reference to the GRI Standards
Where the organization cannot comply with all nine requirements of GRI 1 Section 3, or uses selected GRI Standards to report on specific topics for a specific purpose, is the claim restricted to with reference to, and are the three obligations for that claim met: GRI content index, statement of use and notification to GRI?
Evidence: Gap analysis against Requirements 1 to 9; decision record downgrading the claim where any requirement is unmet; draft GRI content index and statement of use for the with reference to claim
- 1.1 Requirement 1: Apply the reporting principles
Are the reporting principles in GRI 1 Section 4, including accuracy, balance, verifiability and sustainability context, applied across data collection, preparation and review, with performance on each material topic presented against the wider sustainability context, such as local water stress or sector benchmarks?
Evidence: Data quality procedure mapped to the reporting principles; review checklist evidencing each principle; context statements per material topic with sources for thresholds and benchmarks
- 1.1 Balance

Evidence: Target register reconciled to the narrative; incident, grievance and sanctions registers reconciled to the reported information; no exclusion of underperforming sites or periods
- 1.1 Accuracy and verifiability
Can each reported data point be traced to its source records, calculation methodology, assumptions and data owner, to a standard that allows an internal reviewer or assurance provider to re-perform it?
Evidence: Audit trail per indicator: source system, extraction date, calculation workbook, emission and conversion factors with sources, estimation methods, preparer and reviewer sign-off
- 1.2 Requirement 2: Report the disclosures in GRI 2

For each material topic, has the organization identified and reported the Topic Standard disclosures relevant to its impacts, and reported additional disclosures where the Topic Standards do not provide sufficient information about those impacts?
Evidence: Material topic to disclosure mapping with the relevance rationale for each disclosure; methodology statements for additional disclosures
- 1.6 Requirement 6: Reasons for omission
Is each disclosure or requirement the organization cannot comply with supported by one of the four permitted reasons for omission (not applicable, legal prohibitions, confidentiality constraints, information unavailable or incomplete) with an explanation, and is no reason for omission applied to Disclosures 2-1 to 2-5, 3-1 or 3-2?

Reporting in accordance with GRI
What are the requirements for reporting in accordance with the GRI Standards?
The organization must comply with all nine requirements in Section 3 of GRI 1: Foundation 2021: apply the reporting principles; report the disclosures in GRI 2; determine material topics; report the disclosures in GRI 3; report disclosures from the GRI Topic Standards for each material topic; provide reasons for omission for disclosures and requirements it cannot comply with; publish a GRI content index; provide a statement of use; and notify GRI. Applicable GRI Sector Standards must be used when determining material topics and the information to report on them.
When does an organization report with reference to the GRI Standards?
When it cannot comply with all nine requirements for reporting in accordance with the GRI Standards, or when it uses selected GRI Standards, or parts of their content, to report on specific topics for a specific purpose, such as a climate change reporting regulation. The claim then carries three requirements: publish a GRI content index, provide a statement of use and notify GRI.
Is external assurance required to report in accordance with the GRI Standards?
No. GRI recommends external assurance but does not require it for either claim. Disclosure 2-5 External assurance is required: it describes the organization's policy and practice for seeking external assurance, and it is one of the five GRI 2 disclosures, with 2-1 to 2-4, for which no reason for omission is permitted. Where the reporting is assured, the scope in the assurance report must match the claims in the reported information and the GRI content index.
Which GRI Standards take effect for reporting published in 2026 and 2027?
GRI 101: Biodiversity 2024 replaced GRI 304 for reporting on biodiversity published on or after 1 January 2026, and GRI 14: Mining Sector came into effect for reporting in January 2026. GRI 102: Climate Change 2025 and GRI 103: Energy 2025 apply to reporting published on or after 1 January 2027, replacing Disclosures 305-1 to 305-5, Disclosure 201-2 and GRI 302: Energy 2016, with earlier adoption encouraged. The V1.1 versions of GRI 11 to GRI 14 are already aligned with all three.
