Sustainable finance instruments

Sustainable finance directs capital to activities with defined environmental or social outcomes, and the instruments that carry it follow published market standards. Green bonds follow the ICMA Green Bond Principles, green sukuk apply the same principles within a Shariah-compliant structure, and green and sustainability-linked loans follow the Loan Market Association principles. Taxonomies define which activities count as green. Second party opinions and external verification give investors and lenders an independent check, and greenwashing risk grows wherever the label runs ahead of the evidence. The UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Jordan have each set out national frameworks or strategies for sustainable finance. This collection opens with a map of sustainable finance in the GCC and an explanation of taxonomies, works through bonds, sukuk, loans, sustainability-linked structures and their verification, then covers the Equator Principles for project finance and closes with the national frameworks.
